Why Attend a Family Workshop?

Why Attend a Shults-Lewis Parent Workshop?

Bob Kallus, M.S., LMFT

Do you have family issues that won’t go away on their own? Would you seek professional help?

Counseling can address family problems in different ways. Here are a few examples:
Individual sessions - Parents only - Kids only - Various combinations of family members
Groups: teen groups - parents’ groups
Multi-Family groups

What is the special value of a multi-family parenting workshop?

Studies of juvenile criminal offenders have shown the following results:

“In two different studies at seven simultaneously replicating sites, multifamily groups were shown to be more effective than a single-family version of a combination of psychological and behavioral family management.”       (Mcfarlane et.al, 1995)
Mcfarlane, W.R., Link, B., Dushay, R., Deakins, Marchal, J., & Crilly, J. (1995). Psychoeducational multiple family groups: Four-year relapse outcome in schizophrenia. Family Process, 34(2), 127-144.

The re-offense rate of juvenile offenders:
multi-family group non-attendees: 55% - more than half re-offends
multi-family group dropouts: 37% -1 in 3 re-offends
those who completed multi-family groups: 20% - 1 in 5 re-offends
Quinn, W.H., Van Dyke, D.J. (2004). A multiple family group intervention for first time juvenile offenders: Comparisons with probation and dropout on recidivism. Journal of Community Psychology, 32(2), 1-24.

Multi-family groups might help you and yours, even if your problems are less severe.

Our goal is to have you …

   - Receive support and encouragement from other parents
   - See that you are not alone in your problems
   - Get your feelings and experiences validated: “Oh, you mean we’re not crazy?” … “I had no
idea so many other people are going through the same things we are.”
   - Gain a realistic view of yourselves by observing the problems of others
   - Learn new coping skills to help your kids and yourselves
- Feel less isolated and more likely to explore other resources to help your family.

We’ve been offering these workshops on campus since 2004, and the feedback has been 100% positive. Now, you can get the same training, because your church has faithfully supported our ministry for so long. Please ask your church leader or contact us directly. And God bless you!
